What is a blepharoplasty?

The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery states that blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery improves the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, and gives a rejuvenated appearance to the surrounding area of your eyes, making you look more rested and alert.

What can I do for this tired or puffy appearance to my eyes?

One of the first areas where a person begins to notice the signs of aging is surrounding the eyes. It is typically the first area a person will inspect when looking in the mirror, and the eyes are where our attention is directed during a patient-doctor consultation here at The Bressler Center for Facial Plastic Surgery and Skin Care. It is important to address the upper and lower eyelids separately when discussing eyelid rejuvenation surgery.

As a person ages, on the upper eyelid, there is increased redundancy of thin crepe skin and loss of a defined upper eyelid crease. It is also common to see a small amount of bulging fat in the upper eyelid near the nose. It is essential to pay close attention to the position of the eyebrows as low/sagging brows can also lead to that tired upper eye appearance. Typically an upper blepharoplasty removes a small sliver of skin leaving the scar where the natural crease resides. In addition, if necessary, a small amount of fat is removed for contouring.

The lower eyelid can be more variable. A common complaint is one of puffiness below the eyes. This is typically caused by bulging fat in that region. Others dislike the hollow or tear trough closer to the nose. Lower blepharoplasty addresses this fat through an incision just below the lower lid or from the inside through the pink (conjunctiva) portion of the eye. If necessary, fat can be repositioned to fill the tear trough area.

Blepharoplasty will allow for mild improvement of the fine wrinkles surrounding the eye. However, these wrinkles are best addressed with resurfacing techniques and BOTOX®.

What can I expect when considering an eyelid lift or blepharoplasty?

The goal with eyelid rejuvenation is to have a refreshed, vibrant, and enlivened appearance. Once again, the objective is to provide an unoperated appearance and not to change the shape of the eye itself, but only reorient and shape the surrounding tissues.

What is the recovery time for blepharoplasty?

There is typically a mild amount of bruising and most patients can return to work and social activities within one to two weeks.
